Oba Kemathi Nam (Re Make) Lyrics English Translation

If you’re willing, please tell me
so my sorrow can ease a little
why you up and left, breaking my heart
why you up and left, breaking my heart

It was you who came to me back then
It was you who brought me love and said the words
It was you who lit up my life
and you who darkened my whole world today

“I’ll always stay by your side,” you were the one who said it
weaving songs of love, you were the one who sang them
in my arms, you were the one who wanted that warmth
so why did you leave today, girl, without a word to me

Oba Kemathi Nam (Re Make) Song Meaning and Interpretation

A young man has been left by the girl he loved, and the whole song is him asking the one question he can’t let go of: why. She walked out without a word, and the not knowing is what hurts most. He isn’t even demanding she come back. He just wants her to tell him the reason, hoping that an answer might take a little of the weight off his chest. That opening plea, “if you’re willing, tell me, so my sorrow can ease a little,” sets the tone for everything that follows. This is grief that’s still raw, still looking for an explanation.

The heart of the song is the way he keeps repeating “obama thamai,” which means “it was you, you were the one.” He says it over and over, and each time it lands on something she did. You were the one who came to me. You were the one who brought love and actually said it out loud. You were the one who lit up my life. And then the line turns, and it’s the same “you” who darkened my whole world today. That repetition is the point. The same person who was his light is now the source of his dark, and he can’t square the two. Love and loss wearing the same face.

In the last verse the cruelty sharpens, because now he’s quoting her own promises back to her. She was the one who said “I’ll always stay by your side.” She was the one who sat and wove love songs for him. In Sinhala, that image of “pem gee wel gothanawa,” weaving love songs, paints someone who didn’t just love casually but built tenderness with care, the way you’d plait something strand by strand. She was the one who wanted to be held close, who asked for that warmth in his arms. So every memory he holds is one she made, which is exactly why her leaving makes no sense to him.

What you’re left holding at the end is that one small, aching word, “kelle,” girl, in the final line. After all the weight of the verses, he isn’t cursing her. He’s almost gentle, just bewildered, asking how the person who built all of this could slip away today without so much as telling him goodbye.
