Sidi Bidi Adare Sithe Pathum Pa Kere

Sidi Bidi Adare Sithe Pathum Pa Kere Lyrics English Translation

Love broke apart, and the hopes in my heart drifted away
My love for her, that angel, is no more
The love you gave me with your arms held wide open
I don’t see it again, not even in a dream
The words of love have turned into a pile of lies
And now even the thoughts we had have changed
Because you’re not near me …. because you’re not near me
The smiles drifted off and turned into a river of sorrow
The sea water rose and flooded over the bank
Because the sorrow grew too heavy …. because the sorrow grew too heavy

Crying inside a thousand times, sighing the whole night through
They well up …. my tears well up
That one drop of tear falling from your eyes, may it turn to good fortune
May it be so …. may it be yours

Tell me, my dear, the reason love went so far away
Are you saying the mark on your forehead, the fate written there, was never there at all?
Bear it, my love, this life, from one birth to the next
In the birth we come into, let’s come close again

In this endless love, a pain too heavy to carry
It grows …. it grows in my heart
Those words of yours I can no longer hear came floating on the breeze
They came …. they came to me

Tell me, my dear ….
Love broke apart ….

Sidi Bidi Adare Sithe Pathum Pa Kere Song Meaning and Interpretation

The love is already over when this song begins. There is no fight left in it, no pleading for one more chance. A man and a woman take the verses in turn, each of them looking back at what they gave each other, and what they say most clearly is that it will not come back. He remembers her giving her love with her arms held wide open, nothing held back, and now he cannot even reach it in a dream.

The first verse builds its grief out of water, the way Sinhala lyric so often does. The smiles they used to share float off downstream and turn into a river of sorrow, then the river is not big enough for what he feels and the sea itself rises and floods over the bank. That image of water climbing over the edge is how a Sinhala listener hears grief that has stopped being private. The two lines that repeat, “because you’re not near me” and “because the sorrow grew too heavy”, land like something he keeps saying to himself when there is nobody around to answer.

Then the song does something generous. After a night of sighing and crying quietly a thousand times over, he does not wish her any pain in return. He takes the one tear falling from her eyes and asks that it become good luck for her. Someone who has been left is handing over his share of fortune, and that small gesture tells you more about what he felt for her than any of the sad lines before it.

The question in the third verse is the heart of the song. He asks about the tilaka, the mark on the forehead, and here it stands for fate. In Sri Lanka people speak of what is written on your forehead the way English speakers talk about what was meant to be, so he is asking whether it was ever written for them at all, whether they were simply not destined. His answer is not to argue with it. He asks her to bear it, and he moves the love to the next life, from one birth to the next, back into the round of rebirth where a Sri Lankan listener naturally puts a love that had no room in this life. If not now, then in the birth we come into, let’s come close again.

By the last verse the pain has not gone anywhere, it has only grown, and the words she once said reach him on the wind instead of from her mouth. That is what the song leaves you holding: no anger, no blame, just two people who accepted that this time was not theirs, and a promise made across lifetimes because it was the only promise still available to them.
