These corals and these cowries, I string them all on one thread,
and from them I make a cowrie band and tie it around my son’s waist,

A mother is singing her baby boy to sleep, and instead of an ordinary cradle song she dreams up a whole little fairy tale about where he came from. In her telling, he didn’t simply arrive, he rose up out of the sea: from under the soft sand of the ocean floor, rocked gently inside a pearl, carried up on a speck of sea foam, until at last he settled into her cupped hands. It is the oldest move in a lullaby, turning the child into something rare and precious, and the sea gives her the perfect images for it, the pearl and the foam standing in for how soft, small and miraculous he feels to her.

The middle lines hold the quiet of a sleeping baby. Far off in the night sky the evening star is shining white, and at the very same moment a tiny white smile slips across the baby’s lips as he drifts off. She sets the faraway star and the little smile side by side on purpose, so the one mirrors the other, the same pure white light up in the heavens and right here on her child’s face. Anyone who has watched an infant smile in their sleep knows exactly the tenderness she is reaching for.

Then the song turns playful and tender at once. She imagines people going down to the shore to gather treasures for her son: milk-white cowrie shells (kawadi) from the beach, and bright corals (pabalu) from the reef. These are not random trinkets. A cowrie-and-coral string tied around a baby’s waist is an old Sri Lankan custom, partly an ornament and partly a small charm to keep the child safe. So she gathers all of it, threads the shells and corals onto a single string, and ties the little band around his waist, fussing over him the way every mother fusses over a newborn.

What you are left holding is something very simple and very warm. There is no heartbreak here and no hidden sorrow, just a mother bent over her sleeping son, half asleep herself, spinning the sea and the stars into a story about how he is the most precious thing the world ever gave her. That is the whole heart of the song, and it is enough.
