Gaya Geethayan Lyrics English Translation

Singing songs out in the village paddy fields,
running and leaping about, we played.
Back then it was the two of us, her and me,
but today it’s as if she’s gone from this village.
Singing songs out in the village paddy fields,
running and leaping about, we played.
Back then it was the two of us, him and me,
but today it’s as if he’s gone from this village.

One day the teacher caned me,
I still remember the two strokes he gave.
On a day I lay sick,
he stayed close by me the whole night through.
The two of us walked to school together,
and sat in the shade of the trees to study.
Back then it was the two of us, her and me,
but today it’s as if she’s gone from this village.

While bathing I got caught in the current,
and as it pulled me along he hauled me back to shore.
One day I pretended to be cross with him,
and he wouldn’t eat a thing until he made it right.
The two of us roamed here and there together,
playing morning and evening.
Back then it was the two of us, him and me,
but today it’s as if he’s gone from this village.

Gaya Geethayan Song Meaning and Interpretation

This is a song of looking back, someone now grown remembering a childhood spent in a village with one dear friend who has since gone away. There is no grand romance here and no heartbreak in the usual sense. It’s the quieter ache of remembering, the way a place can feel emptied out once the person you shared it with is no longer there.

The whole song lives in the paddy fields and lanes of one small village. The opening line of singing out in the wel eliye, the open clearing of the paddy land, sets the world: this is the countryside, where children had the fields and the tree shade for a playground. Each memory is small and ordinary, and that is exactly why it lands. The teacher’s two cane strokes that the narrator still counts after all these years. The friend who sat by the sickbed the whole night. The walk to school side by side and lessons done in the shade of the trees. The day the narrator slipped and got dragged by the river current while bathing, and the friend pulling them back onto the bank. The childish sulk, pretended anger over nothing, and the friend who refused to eat until things were patched up. These are the details of a real friendship, not invented ones, and a Sri Lankan listener recognizes every one of them from their own village childhood.

The line that carries the weight is the refrain, “today it’s as if he is gone from this village.” The song does not say where the friend went or why, only that the village now feels like it has lost them. The memories are warm, but the present tense around them is hollow. That gap between the bright “back then” and the empty “today” is the whole feeling of the song. It notably moves between calling the friend “she” in one breath and “he” in the next, blurring the line so the memory belongs to anyone listening; whatever the bond was, it was the closest thing the narrator had.

What you are left holding is gratitude shaded with loss. The friend may be gone, but every paddy field, every tree, every bend of the river still carries the memory of them. That is what the song is really about, how the places of our childhood keep the people we have lost, and how returning to them is both a comfort and a small grief.
