Jagath Wickramasinghe (ජගත් වික්රමසිංහ), also written Jagath Wickramasingha, is a Sri Lankan singer, composer, and instrumentalist born on 10 April 1966. He is widely recognised for melodic pop and ballad songs such as “Saagara Tharanga” and “Obe Sina Langa,” and to a later generation as one of the original panel of judges on the televised singing competition Sirasa Superstar.
Wickramasinghe was raised in a household built around music. Both of his parents, L. K. Jinadasa Wickramasinghe and Aryawathi Chandralatha, worked as music teachers, and music was part of daily life from childhood. He studied at Ananda College in Colombo before pursuing formal training, earning the Sangeeth Visharad qualification and a diploma in vocal music at the Bhatkhande institute in Lucknow, India, while also studying Western music through Trinity College of London.
His recording career took shape from the early 1980s, with his songs gaining wide play through Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation radio. “Ran Tharakawan” is often cited as his first solo song, and over the following years he built a catalogue spanning pop, soul, and lighter classical-influenced material. His voice carries the gentle, romantic register that defines much of his best-loved work, including “Pemwanthain Se Sina Si” and “Obath Mamath.”
Beyond performing, Jagath Wickramasingha composed many of his own recordings, writing the music for songs such as “Malathi Mal Latha,” “Sudu Ruwani,” and “Adare Obagen Himi Wedo.” He has performed for Sri Lankan audiences across many countries and served on the judging panel of Sirasa Superstar across its early seasons, helping introduce a new wave of singers.
For listeners who grew up with Sri Lankan radio in the 1980s and 1990s, the songs of Jagath Wickramasinghe remain steady favourites, valued for their warm melodies and clear, unforced delivery. His Sinhala lyrics are presented here with English transliteration and translation so that diaspora listeners can follow the meaning alongside the original ජගත් වික්රමසිංහ recordings.
