Api Wen Wena Tharamata Lyrics
Api ven vena tharamata kiyana deval
Kohomada uhula ganne
Api ven vena thanatama katayuthu venakota
Kohomada bala bala inne
Api ek vuna mathakaya sihiyata enavita
Kandulai desa themanne
Mama oba gena hitha hitha duk vena hama vita
Manasai vandi gewanne...
Hithanna ba hitha keeri gahenava
Oya sudu muhuna mathak vi
Sibinna ba muva ahaka balanava
Mage muva ekka taraha vi
Kiyanna ba ape adara kathava
Kanduluth ekka sinasi
Soyanna ba thawa oya wage kenek
Adare karanna pera se
Api ven vena tharamata kiyana deval
Kohomada uhula ganne
Api ven vena thanatama katayuthu venakota
Kohomada bala bala inne...
Sundara sinava hurathal inava
Dakinna asai andure
Dewatunu heti adarei kiya mata
Daenenava kithi kevi yahane
Thol pethi sibinna asai athata
Thurulata gena oba pera se
Adare kiyanne thawa eka serayak
Ven vi yannata maththen...
Api ven vena tharamata....
Api Wen Wena Tharamata Lyrics English Translation
The things people say about us drifting apart,
how am I supposed to bear it?
As the steps are taken to push us to separate places,
how can I just stand by and watch?
When the memory of us being together comes back to me,
tears wet my eyes.
Every time I think of you and ache,
it’s my mind that pays the price…
I can’t even think of it, my heart shudders
when your fair face comes to mind.
I can’t kiss you, you turn your face away,
angry with my lips.
I can’t tell the story of our love,
laughing through the tears.
I won’t go looking for someone else like you
to love the way I loved before.
The things people say about us drifting apart,
how am I supposed to bear it?
As the steps are taken to push us to separate places,
how can I just stand by and watch?…
That lovely smile, that sweet, playful sway,
I long to see it in the dark.
The way you used to curl up against me said you loved me,
I can still feel it, a tingle on the bed.
I long to kiss your lips for real,
to hold you close like before.
I want to say “I love you” just one more time
before we have to part…
The things people say about us drifting apart…….

Api Wen Wena Tharamata Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man is watching the love of his life slip away, and there is nothing he can do to stop it. The song opens with him caught in the worst part of a breakup, the talk. People around them are already speaking of the two of them as good as separated, arrangements are being made to push them to different places, and he is left asking the same helpless question over and over: how am I supposed to bear this, how can I just stand here and watch it happen? When the memory of the two of them together comes back, his eyes fill up, and he says it is his own mind that ends up paying for all this longing.
From there the song moves inward, into all the small, intimate things he is about to lose. He can’t even let himself think about it, because the moment her fair face comes to mind his heart shudders. In Sinhala love songs a “fair face” (sudu muhuna) is shorthand for someone gentle and dear, the face you hold in your mind, so the image is less about skin and more about how precious she is to him. He remembers trying to kiss her and her turning away, angry, and he remembers not being able to tell their love story without laughing and crying at the same time. Then comes the line that gives the song its weight: he won’t go looking for anyone else like her, won’t love again the way he loved before. For him this isn’t one breakup among many. It is the end of love itself.
The last verse is the most tender and the most physical. He thinks of her lovely smile and the soft, playful way she used to move, and he aches to see all of it again, even just in the dark. He remembers how she would curl up against him on the bed, and how that closeness was its own way of saying “I love you,” a feeling he can still feel on his skin. He wants to kiss her for real, to hold her close like before, and most of all he wants to say “I love you” out loud just one more time, before the two of them are pulled apart for good.
What stays with you is that quiet, doomed wish at the end. He isn’t asking to win her back or to change her mind. He has accepted that the parting is coming. All he wants is one more kiss, one more embrace, one last “I love you” to carry with him, and the song leaves you holding that ache with him.
