A young man is caught somewhere between sleeping and waking, holding on to someone who came to him like a dream. She touched his head gently, the way you comfort someone you love, and the moment was so soft and unreal that he can’t tell whether it actually happened or his own heart only imagined it. That uncertainty is the whole feeling of the song. He wants her badly, but he isn’t even sure she was ever real.

The middle of the song is built around her slipping away from him. She flies up into the sky and dives down into the sea, and he keeps begging the clouds and the waves to carry her name back to him. In Sinhala love poetry the sky and the ocean are the vast, unreachable places, so picturing her vanishing into them says she has gone somewhere he can never follow. The ache is sharpened by one small, painful detail: he doesn’t even know her name. His heart stopped at a song, he says, and now he just wants to give himself over to this nameless dream, even knowing it may lead nowhere.

The strongest image is the nameless flower that keeps blooming. A flower opening is the old Sinhala picture of love coming to life, of something tender taking root inside you. Here it blooms in three places at once: in the wild thicket of his heart, in the flood of his own tears, and in thick darkness. So this love grows in him even though everything around it is overgrown, drowning, and pitch black. It is beautiful and hopeless at the same time, a feeling that refuses to die even when there is nothing to hold on to.

What the listener is left with is that bittersweet not-knowing. He never learned who she was, never got to keep her, and may have only dreamed the whole thing. Yet the touch of her hand and the flower blooming in the dark stay with him, and that is exactly how a first, half-imagined love lingers long after the person is gone.
