This song is a love letter to a waterfall. Dunhinda is the famous Dunhinda Falls near Badulla, high in Sri Lanka’s up-country hills, and the whole lyric turns that cascade into a young bride coming down the mountainside. The singer never addresses a person at all. He is speaking to the falls themselves, calling them “sundariye” (beautiful one), “surataliye” (darling) and “manamali” (bride), so the rush of water becomes a tender woman gracefully making her descent.

The pictures all come from what the falls actually look like. The water wraps around the mountain crags and the mist hangs over everything, and the poet reads that as a dancer moving with splendour, her veil trailing as she goes. When he says she brings “siriya” to the “helaya,” he means this single waterfall lends its beauty and pride to the whole Sinhala homeland. It is a small note of patriotism folded into the praise, the idea that something this lovely belongs to and honours the country.

Then comes the line that gives the song its heart. The water hits the rocks below and shatters into spray, and instead of seeing power or noise, he sees grief. The bursting droplets “rise up like little teardrops,” as if the falling water were crying. So he pleads with her, gently, “if it hurts you, fall softly, Dunhinda bride.” A waterfall cannot feel pain, of course, but the tenderness is the point. He cares so much for this place that he imagines the long drop must ache, and he asks her to take it easy.

What you are left with is the particular Sri Lankan habit of loving the land as if it were a person. The hills, the mist and the spray are not just scenery here. They are a beautiful bride the singer wants to protect, and the song hands you that affection for a real, living corner of the country.
