Maage Pawkara Mithuro Nisa

Maage Pawkara Mithuro Nisa Lyrics English Translation
Because of my sinful friends
I am spending my last night in a prison cell…
Tomorrow I will die on the gallows…
When I was small she took me to the temple
and mother told me what hell is like, pointing at the pictures…
“If you do wrong, this is what becomes of you”
“But my son is not like that, he will grow up to be a good boy”
Mother, only now do I understand what those words were worth…
Because of my sinful friends…
I did not listen to you, and my mind was drawn to sin
Because of bad company, the gallows became mine…
Tomorrow I will be gone from this world
If I am born again in a next life, let me be your son
Mother, I will not put you through this sorrow again…
Because of my sinful friends
I am spending my last night in a prison cell…
Tomorrow I will die on the gallows…

Maage Pawkara Mithuro Nisa Song Meaning and Interpretation
A man is sitting out his last night in a prison cell. In the morning they will hang him, and the only person he wants to talk to is his mother. That is the whole song, one long apology from a son who has run out of time to make anything up to her.
He names what he blames right at the start: the friends who pulled him into the trouble that put him here. There is no defence, no claim that he is innocent, just that one bitter line about bad company, and then his mind goes back to when he was a child.
The memory he lands on is one any Sri Lankan raised Buddhist will recognise. His mother takes him to the temple, and there on the wall are the apaya paintings, the murals of hell that most village temples carry, with sinners being boiled in cauldrons, sawn in half, driven up the thorn tree. Mothers point at them and say, do wrong and this is where you end up. Then she softens it the way mothers do, “but not my son, my son will be a good boy.” He remembers both halves. The warning he ignored, and the faith in him that he did not live up to.
The last verse is where it really hurts. He does not ask for a pardon and he does not ask to be spared. He asks for a next birth, and for her to be his mother in it, and he promises that this time he will not do this to her. In Buddhist thinking that is the only thing left for him to offer, because this life ends at dawn. And his closing line, that he will not cause her grief anymore, is true in the saddest way possible. After tomorrow he will not be around to.
Songs like this belong to an older Sri Lankan tradition of the condemned man’s lament, sung plainly, with no drama and no self pity. What makes it land is that the confession is never about the crime. It is about a mother standing in front of a painted wall years ago, telling her boy what happens to people who go wrong, and being right.
