Raththaran oba maiNidukin Inu Mana Lyrics English Translation
Stay free of pain for me, a while longer
Take my life with you
Stay happy, taking all my happiness
For as long as life lasts
The sorrow I am suffering, don’t ever
hand it to anyone else again
The sorrow I was given in saṃsāra (the cycle of rebirth)
may it never come to you
Your eyes come close to me again
You who searched for me, who loved me every single day
filling up my heart…
Even after a fight, the one I wanted to stay friends with
was only you
The moment I saw those eyes of yours turning away
the loneliness it left me is a shame I can’t bear
Truly, even if I tried to leave on some old memory, I can’t go
my eyes were always wet with tears, a place I just couldn’t stay
Your eyes come close to me again
You who searched for me, who loved me every single day
filling up my heart…
When you, who were once so close, went away
the sorrow it left is as wide as the sky
I can’t hide it and carry on, my heart is tied to you
there’s no help for me
However happy we could have been
we couldn’t stay together, and the one who hurt me this much
my darling, it was you

Nidukin Inu Mana Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man is left holding the wreckage of a love that has ended, and the first thing he does is wish the girl who left him well. Stay free of pain, he tells her, stay happy, even take whatever happiness I have left. He would rather carry all the hurt himself than let her feel any of it. That is where the song lives, in the strange tenderness of someone who still loves the person who broke him.
The ache deepens as he remembers the small things. Even in the middle of a fight, he says, the only one he ever wanted to make up with and stay close to was her. The hardest moment is the one he keeps returning to, the instant he saw her eyes turn away from him. In Sinhala love songs the eyes carry everything, they are how two people speak without words, so watching her gaze move away is the same as watching the whole relationship leave. After that his eyes are always wet, and he admits he simply cannot stand to be where he is.
When he reaches for how big the loss feels, he says the sorrow is as wide as the sky. It is a plain, everyday Sinhala way of saying a pain too large to measure or hold, something that stretches past the edges of him. He cannot hide it, he cannot move on, his heart is still tied to her with no way to free it.
The last line is the one that stings. After wishing her nothing but happiness for the whole song, he finally names who caused all of it, the one he calls raththaran, his gold, his darling, the most loving word he has. It was you, he says, you are the one who gave me this much hurt. He is not accusing her so much as breaking a little, loving her and grieving her in the same breath. That is what the listener is left holding, a goodbye that refuses to turn into anger, only sorrow.
