This is a song of grief, sung by someone who has lost the person they loved most. There is no flirting or longing for a new love here. From the start, the voice is looking back over a whole life shared with another, and now facing a world without them.

The opening lines hold a quiet promise the singer made: across the whole of life, the one wish was to carry every trouble and every pain alone, to hide it away so the other person never had to feel it. That tenderness sets up everything that follows. Then comes the memory that hurts the most, sitting together under the moonlight, counting the stars, filling the night with shared hopes, and never once a harsh word between them. It is the picture of a gentle, settled love.

The grief lands through two images a Sri Lankan listener catches at once. The lost person is called a star and a moon, and that moon has “hidden away in the dark,” it has set and will not rise again. In Sinhala song the moon stands for the calm, steady presence of a loved one, so saying it has slipped into darkness is a soft, devastating way of saying they have died. The other image is plainer and more final: “under the white sand, peace now lies at rest.” White sand is the sand heaped over a fresh grave. The one who once carried away all the pain is now the one buried, at peace, while the singer is left in a world “wrapped in thick darkness.”

What the listener is left holding is the ache of the last lines. The singer asks how anyone is meant to bear this, knowing the answer already: never again will that moon come back the way it always was. The whole song is the sound of someone standing at a grave, talking to a person who can no longer answer, holding on to the light they used to share.
