Duka Thada Karan Lyrics
Duka thada karan mahamera tharam
Mata inna bae oba naetiwa nam
Api hamu wunath indahita yalith
Ek wenna bae kawadakawath
Nithara waetena kandulata ithin
Katha karaganna puluwan nam
Kiyai handaga lowata mathu da
Obata mama adare kiyala
Duka thada karan mahamera tharam
Mata inna bae oba naetiwa nam
Witeka lan welaa witeka wen welaa
Gewena ape adare
Kelawarak soyaa thawama thaewenawa
Maeri maeri jeewithe
Kohoma piliganne mama nam
Obe daetha ahimiyi kiyaa
Duka thada karan mahamera tharam..
Nonida rae pura dethenakata welaa
Himi ape iraname
Daenena waedana wachanayan kiyaaganna
Bae pana mage
Nodaka hinahenne kohomai
Kiya denna awidin soyaa
Duka thada karan mahamera tharam..
Nithara waetena kandulata ithin..
Duka Thada Karan Lyrics English Translation
Holding the grief in, heavy as the great mountain,
I can’t go on without you.
Even if we meet now and then,
we can never be together again.
If only I could speak
to these tears that keep falling,
they would cry out to the whole world someday
that I love you.
Holding the grief in, heavy as the great mountain,
I can’t go on without you.
Sometimes close, sometimes apart,
this love of ours wearing away.
Still it aches, searching for an end,
dying over and over in this life.
How am I ever to accept
that your hands are lost to me?
Holding the grief in, heavy as the great mountain..
Awake the whole night, the two of us
split between two places by our fate.
This pain I feel, I can’t put into words,
my love, my life.
Come and find me, come and teach me
how to smile without seeing you.
Holding the grief in, heavy as the great mountain..
To these tears that keep falling..

Duka Thada Karan Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man is carrying a grief he can barely hold inside, and the whole song is him speaking straight to the person he loves and has lost. They are not strangers. They still run into each other now and then. That is almost the cruelest part, because being near her and knowing they can never be together again only sharpens the ache. The opening line sets the weight of it: he says he is pressing the sorrow down inside him, and it is as heavy as Mahameru, the great mountain at the center of the world in Buddhist and Hindu cosmology. When a Sinhala lyric reaches for Mahameru, it means a heaviness beyond anything ordinary, the largest thing imaginable. That is how big the grief feels, and he is trying to keep it from spilling out.
From there the song moves through the slow wearing-down of a love that has no future. He pictures his tears as something almost alive, and he wishes he could talk to them, because if they could speak they would tell the whole world one day that he loved her. It is a tender, aching image: when he can no longer say it himself, the falling tears would carry the message for him. The middle of the song names the shape of the pain plainly. Sometimes they drift close, sometimes apart, and the love just keeps fraying. He says he is dying over and over, not as a single blow but as a thing he lives through again and again, still hunting for some end to it that never comes. The hardest thought of all is simple: how is he supposed to accept that her hands, once his to hold, are now beyond his reach.
By the last verse he is lying awake through the night, the two of them separated into two different places by fate, and he admits the deepest hurt of the song. He cannot even put what he feels into words. So he asks her, almost like a plea, to come and find him and teach him the one thing he no longer knows how to do, smile without seeing her face. That is where the song leaves you, with a man who is not asking to win her back, only asking to learn how to live with her gone. The grief stays as heavy as the mountain, and the love never lets go.
