Duka Wedi Nethe Lyrics
Duka wedi nethe
Kanduleli pire
Oba nethi mohothe
Sena suma mage oba
gena giye
Ai hora rahase..
Kawadawath na...
Api hamuwanne...
mata yannata ba...
Mathaken obage...
Diwiya mage thibena tura
Pem keruwe obata thama
Diwiya mage thibena thura
Pem keruwe obata thama
Yantham wath senehe
Nethiwada denune
Thawamath mathakai...
Diwra mage bawa keewa
Diwra mage bawa keewa
Piyawi lowe inna sada
Huru keruwe obama thama
Piyawi lowe inna sada
Huru keruwe obama thama
Saththai raththarane
Oba giya dinaye
Hithakin wath na...
Oba hata saradam karala
Oba hata saradam karalaDuka Wedi Nethe Lyrics English Translation
My grief grows deeper
My eyes fill with tears
In the moments you are not here
The gentle love you gave me
you took away
Why, in secret and unseen?
Never again…
will we meet…
I cannot go on…
A single memory of you…
For as long as I live
I have loved only you
For as long as I live
I have loved only you
Did even a little of that love
not reach you at all?
I still remember…
You swore it to me, you said
You swore it to me, you said
For as long as I lived in this world
you were the one I grew close to
For as long as I lived in this world
you were the one I grew close to
It’s true, my darling
on the day you left
not even in your thoughts…
having teased and played with you
having teased and played with you

Duka Wedi Nethe Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man is left grieving after the one he loved has gone, and the song catches him in that raw stretch right after, when the grief only keeps growing instead of easing. His eyes fill with tears in every moment she is not beside him. What stings most is how quietly she slipped away, taking back the gentle love she once gave, “in secret and unseen,” as if she could undo it without him noticing. He already knows the worst part: they will never meet again, and he doesn’t know how to carry on with only a memory of her to hold.
From there the song turns into a quiet plea and a reminder of everything they had. He tells her he has loved only her for as long as he has lived, and you can hear the disbelief underneath it, the question of how even a little of all that love could have failed to reach her. He clings to the promises she once made, the vows she swore to him, because they are all he has left now that she is gone.
The last verse is the tenderest and the saddest. She was the person he grew close to, the one he built his small everyday life around in this world. The Sinhala word for that closeness, “huru,” is the warm familiarity of someone who becomes part of your routine, the person you tease and joke with without thinking. So when he says he teased and played with her, he isn’t bragging, he is mourning the ordinary, easy intimacy that’s now lost. The ache that the song leaves you with is exactly that: not a grand tragedy, but the loss of the comfortable, lived-in love of two people who knew each other completely, and the loneliness of being the only one still holding on.
