A man sits with a wound that has not closed. The woman he loved has left him, parted from him in a way that meant she would never come back, and the song opens with him still in it, still crying, the tears no fewer than the day she walked out. There is a quiet, bitter ache in the way he asks her, twice, “Are you happy now?” He is not really asking for an answer. He is saying that whatever peace she found, she found it by leaving him broken.

The middle of the song is where the betrayal sits. She made promises and broke them, and the cruelest part is what his own heart did with that: it kept insisting the promises were real, that surely she had not lied to him. He chased after her with everything he had, his whole life bent toward holding on, and all it left him with is “a field of sighs,” susum yaya, the image of breath after heavy breath spreading out as far as the eye can see. The smile he used to wear has simply floated off his face, the way muwage sina paawi giya carries it, gone to a distance he never dreamed a person could go from him.

What hurts him most is not the grand loss but the small, intimate memory. He keeps returning to the bed and the soft, half-formed words they used to murmur there, the private talk of two people in love, and it will not leave his mind. In Sinhala the tenderness lands in that last verse: he calls her menika, “my gem,” the word a Sri Lankan man uses for the woman he treasures most, and reminds himself that he had kept her safe, cherished her, guarded her. And still she flew away, piyamba gihin, like a bird taking flight, doing it in secret, hidden from everyone. That is the picture he is left holding, the man who protected his most precious thing only to watch it slip out quietly while he slept, into a dream where his eyes keep filling with tears.
