A young man can’t take his eyes off a girl who has him completely spellbound. That is the whole song, and it never pretends to be more than that. He keeps calling her visekari, which roughly means a girl so striking she seems to cast a spell, an “enchantress,” and the word becomes his nickname for her all the way through. It’s flirty, hot-blooded, and a little over the top on purpose. He even asks, only half joking, whether she came down from the world of the gods, because no ordinary girl could look like this.

The song is built as a back and forth between two voices. Bachi Susan rides in with the English reggae and dancehall lines, the “Rude Bwoy” calling out to the “slim body girl” and telling all the boys she’s his number one, while the Sinhala verses carry the same hunger in softer, more poetic language. The two halves are saying the same thing in two different accents, one in island patois, the other in lover’s Sinhala.

The Sinhala imagery is where the heat lives, and a lot of it would slip past someone who doesn’t know the conventions. He watches the white frill of her cloth sway over her hips and says his heart just stops there beside her. When he says his eyes’ arrows are already in her embrace, it’s the old idea of glances as Cupid’s arrows, his looks have flown to her before the rest of him can follow. He reaches for the moon to describe her, calling her hips fragrant like the moon and her face a rainbow, the moon being the standard Sinhala image for cool, glowing beauty. He calls her muwaththiya, the doe-eyed one, a tender word for a girl with soft, wide eyes, the way poets praise a woman as graceful as a deer. There’s even a line about the spring season passing close to her, as if her presence turns everything around her into bloom.

By the end he’s not really asking for anything practical. He half pleads for her to take his heart and hide it away, which is the playful surrender at the center of it all. This isn’t a deep song and it doesn’t try to be. It’s the pure rush of being knocked sideways by someone beautiful, set to a beat you can dance to, with two singers egging each other on about the same irresistible girl.
