Two people are in love with an ocean lying between them, and the song opens with the smallest possible question: did your heart skip too, when you looked at me? A young woman and a young man take turns asking it, and neither one is sure the other feels the same. That uncertainty is the whole charm of the song. They are not fighting or grieving, they are just checking, the way you do when someone matters far more to you than you have admitted out loud.

Hitha hiri watunado is a lovely bit of Sinhala. Hiri watenawa is the pins-and-needles feeling you get when a limb goes numb, that sudden tingle, so the line is asking whether the heart went numb and buzzy for a second at the sight of a pair of eyes. English does not have a neat word for it. “Did your heart skip” gets the sense, though the Sinhala image is more physical, a jolt running through you before your mind catches up.

The sigh in the second line does real work. With nothing but distance to work with, love has to travel some way, so it gets folded into a breath and sent, the same way an older Sinhala song would send a message with a bird or a cloud. Then comes the confession that this has been going on a while, whole nights spent crying with the pain kept inside, love carried on from the other side of the sea. Anyone who has kept a relationship alive between Colombo and somewhere far away will know that arithmetic of time zones and unanswered calls.

The bridge is where the song lifts. Love with no nim him, no boundary and no far edge, has been painting pictures in dreams, because dreaming is the only place these two get to be together. Then the promise: even if it all floats off into the far sky, even after a life is done, the love itself does not change. That is a big claim for a pop song, and it lands because the singers have not exaggerated anything else. They kept it to eyes, a sigh, a sleepless night.

What you are left holding is the tenderness of a question that never quite gets answered. The song circles back to it again and again, still asking, still hoping, and that repetition is the point. Some love stays in the asking stage for years, and it is no less real for it.
