A young man has fallen for a woman he sees as rare and untouched, and the whole song is him gently asking whether she will let him love her. He opens by speaking to a white araliya, the frangipani or temple flower, that has bloomed all on its own. In Sinhala song the araliya carries a kind of pure, quiet beauty, the flower you find at temples and shrines, fragrant and white and a little set apart. By calling her that flower blooming alone, he is saying she is lovely but unattached, and he is asking, almost shyly, if he may now be the one who keeps her company.

The middle verse is where the longing shows. He says her very words carry a fragrance, that talking to her is like breathing in a sweet scent, and he reaches for the moon to describe her, the standing image in Sinhala song for a calm, cooling beauty that soothes rather than dazzles. But against all that brightness he admits the flower of his own heart has gone dark. He sees her glow, and next to it he feels his own loneliness, a love that has not yet been answered.

By the last verse he stops hinting and lays it bare. He has closed the doors of his palace, left everything behind, and come out into the world just to find her. The palace stands for whatever comfort and shelter he had, and he is saying none of it matters next to her. His plea is simple and human: don’t go far, stay close to me. What the listener is left holding is that tender, unsure moment right before love is returned, a man holding out his heart and waiting to see if she will stay.
