A young woman is caught up in someone she barely knows. It started on a night at the spring festival, where, in the middle of thousands of people, one face stood out and stayed with her. Ever since, she cannot shake him. His voice, his presence, the memory of that night keep coming back, and she is left asking the same question over and over: why did he go away and leave her heart in tears?

The song moves through the small, ordinary moments where he keeps surfacing. At the festival, surrounded by music, it was his voice she picked out from all the rest. Later, walking through the busy city at noon, he suddenly appeared beside her, and even over the harsh roar of traffic it was his singing she heard. The point of these scenes is how completely he has taken over her senses. Whether it is the sweet sound of festival music (the “seven notes,” the sat sara, the full scale of Sinhala music) or the ugly clatter of a crowded street, every sound somehow turns into his voice. She is hearing him everywhere because she cannot stop thinking about him.

The last verse is where the ache settles in. Now he visits her in sleep, hiding in the “threads of dreams” night after night, that tangle of half-images you wake from but cannot hold onto. The image is gentle and helpless at once: she has no power over when he appears, even her dreams are not her own anymore. And under it runs the real wound, that he never explained anything.
