Ambili Mame Lyrics
Ambili mame oba mokada karanne...
Pulun wala yatin indan ebila balanne
Vatin pitin adenne
Muhuna obe pisinne
Seda yoda sedu wala saluda kiyanne
(Patha balanne.... muwa vihidanne...
Ridi sina papa melo eliya karanne...)
Ambili mame..
Sisil sulan hamanne
Kumudu saman pipenne
Anduru kala dasata bala panala duwanne
(Turu nelawenne.... suwada hamanne...
Kusum thala renu sala bima sarasanne..)
Ambili mame..
Siyal sathun nidanne
Suran melo vadinne
Guwan kuse manik rase oba sarasanne
(Sirasa sadanne... ras palandanne....
Supun sade oba nibande lo pubudanne..)
Ambili mame..
Ambili Mame Lyrics English Translation
Uncle Moon, what are you doing,
peeping out from beneath the cottony clouds?
Drifting from side to side,
wiping your face clean,
is that cloud a silken robe stitched for you?
(You look down, you break into a smile,
laughing your silver laugh, lighting up the whole world.)
Uncle Moon…
A cool breeze is blowing,
the water lilies and jasmine bloom,
and the dark night, seeing you, leaps up and runs away.
(The trees sway gently, a fragrance drifts,
scattering flower petals and pollen to decorate the ground.)
Uncle Moon…
All the creatures are sleeping,
the gods come down to this world,
and across the belly of the sky you adorn yourself like a jewel.
(You crown your head, you wear a halo of light,
full moon, you forever wake the world to brightness.)
Uncle Moon…

Ambili Mame Song Meaning and Interpretation
This is one of those gentle children’s songs that almost every Sri Lankan grows up hearing. A child looks up at the night sky and talks to the moon as if he were a kindly relative, calling him “Ambili Mama,” which means Uncle Moon. In Sri Lankan homes the moon has always been a warm, familiar figure for little ones, not a distant ball of rock but a friendly uncle who comes out at night to watch over them. The whole song is the child chatting to him, full of wonder, asking what he is up to as he peeks out from behind the clouds.
The pictures the song paints are simple and lovely. The clouds slipping over the moon become a soft silk robe wrapped around him, and when he wipes them from his face he smiles down with a “silver laugh” that lights up the earth. That silver light is the moonlight itself, the cool, calm glow that Sinhala songs always tie to peace and gentleness rather than to the harsh dazzle of the sun. As the moon rises, the breeze turns cool, the night flowers open, the kumudu (water lily) and the jasmine, and the darkness, almost shy in front of him, gets up and runs away. It is a child’s way of describing how moonlight makes the whole night feel softer and safer.
By the last verse the world has gone quiet. Every creature is asleep, and in the old village imagination the gods themselves are said to come down to walk the earth on bright moonlit nights. The moon sits high in the wide sky like a jewel set in place, wearing his light like a crown. The closing line names him the supun sanda, the full moon, who forever wakes the world to brightness even while everyone sleeps.
What makes the song special is its tenderness. There is no longing or sadness here, just a child’s pure delight in the night sky and the comfort of a moon who feels like family. It is the kind of song a parent hums to settle a little one, teaching them to see beauty and kindness in the world above them.
