Lo Ada Ninde Lyrics
Lo ada ninde me ra yame
Sanda ras wathure kimindenne
Ran tharu babale nil akase
Lassana mal wage
Kirala gase gedi diya matha wetila
Pahalata basa yai diya alle
Namal pipila nelawethi sulange
Suwanda hama dasathe
Sobana me nadiye....sobana me nadiye
Sandaras pathirene....
Lo ada ninde ...
Al kethakin ena dariyaka ge handa
Dan dan ma hada nalawanne
Maha ra hindai ayage ridi handa
Dasathama pathirenne
Kawuruda alhenene....kawuruda alhenene
Gi handa pathuranne....
Lo ada ninde...
Lo Ada Ninde Lyrics English Translation
The world is half asleep in this late night hour,
moonlight sinks and bathes in the water.
Golden stars glitter in the blue sky,
like lovely flowers.
The fruit of the kirala tree falls onto the water,
and floats down with the stream of the waterfall.
Iron-wood blossoms have opened, swaying in the breeze,
their fragrance spreading in every direction.
This lovely river… this lovely river,
moonlight spreading wide across it.
The world is half asleep…
The voice of a girl coming from a paddy field
is soothing my heart now.
Because it is the dead of night, her silvery voice
carries out in every direction.
Who is it in the chena field… who is it in the chena field,
sending a song out into the night.
The world is half asleep…

Lo Ada Ninde Song Meaning and Interpretation
This is a quiet song about a moonlit night by a river, the kind of song that asks you to simply stop and look. There is no heartbreak in it and no one to long for. The singer is awake while the rest of the world has gone to sleep, and what keeps him up is not sorrow but the sheer beauty of the night in front of him.
The whole first part is one held picture. The moon is so bright that its light seems to dip down and bathe in the water of the river, and the stars overhead are scattered like flowers across the blue sky. Then his eye comes down to the small, real things by the water. The kirala is a riverside tree common to Sri Lanka’s wetlands, and one of its fruit drops onto the surface and is carried off by the current toward the little waterfall. Na flowers (the iron-wood blossom, a flower Sri Lankans treasure for its scent) have opened in the dark and sway in the breeze, and their fragrance drifts out on every side. When he calls the river sobana, lovely, with the moonlight spreading right across it, you understand this is a person standing still in a place he finds almost holy in its calm.
Then a human note enters the stillness. From somewhere out in the paddy fields a girl is singing, and in the silence of deep night her voice carries clear across the whole countryside. He calls it a ridi handa, a silver voice, the way Sinhala likes to compare a sweet, clear sound to silver, and it soothes his heart. He does not know who she is. He just wonders aloud who out there in the chena, the slash-and-burn highland field, is sending a song into the dark.
That is the gentle heart of it. A man alone at night, moved first by the moon and the river and the scent of flowers, and then by a stranger’s song floating over the fields. Nothing happens, and that is the point. The song hands you the peace of a Sri Lankan village night, where the loveliest thing you can do is stay awake long enough to notice it.
