Let us meet one more day, in this life
Even one glimpse of your eyes would be enough
Let me whisper, softly, how much I wept for you
Let us meet one more day, in this life…
The gentle breeze carried them away,
our memories that will never come back
In the passing hours on my sleeping mat
I kept remembering your fragrance
My life is empty now…
Let us meet one more day, in this life
Even one glimpse of your eyes would be enough
On the moon that blooms in the row of stars
sorrow has grown over this world of ours
In the pearl bed of the ocean of milk
my jewel slipped away and hid
like a song of love…
Let us meet one more day…

Thawa Dawasak Hamu Wee Imu Me Bawe Song Meaning and Interpretation
A man is grieving someone he loved and lost, and the whole song is one long ache to see her again. He isn’t asking for much. Just one more day together in this life, just one more look at her eyes, and that would be enough. That small, almost humble wish is what makes the song hurt so much. He has already lost her, and now he bargains with fate for the smallest scrap of her.
The middle verse puts us in the quiet of his nights. The breeze that once felt soft has carried off the memories they made together, memories he knows can never come back. Lying awake on his sleeping mat as the hours drag by, what stays with him is her fragrance, the way the scent of someone you love lingers long after they are gone. By the end of the verse he says it plainly: his life is empty now. There is no metaphor left to hide behind.
The last verse is where the Sinhala imagery does its heaviest work. He looks up at the moon set among the stars, and instead of beauty he sees sorrow spreading over the world. Then comes the line that tells you she has died, or is lost to him forever: in the “ocean of milk” (කිරි සයුර, the great mythic sea churned by the gods), down in its bed of pearls, his jewel has slipped away and hidden. Calling her his මැණික, his gem or jewel, is the tenderest word a Sinhala speaker has for a beloved, and to say the gem sank and vanished into the deepest, most unreachable place is to say she is gone where he cannot follow. He closes it “like a song of love,” as if the loss itself has become the only love song he has left.
What you are left holding is that opening wish, heard now with full weight. He knows she is gone. He still asks, quietly, for one more day and one more look. That is the whole prayer of the song, and anyone who has lost someone they could not let go of will feel exactly where it comes from.
