A man is still turned toward a love he has lost, and he can’t let her go. He looks up at the night sky, the golden stars are coming out, and yet what he keeps seeing is her smile, the smile of the one who once won his heart. That image of her won’t leave him. He wants her to know that whoever he is with now, it is not really someone else, it is still her he is searching for in everything.

The ache here is sharpened by regret. He admits the fault was mostly his own and asks her to forgive him, calling her sonduriye, “my beautiful one,” the tender name a Sinhala man uses for the woman he loves. He isn’t blaming her or the world. He carries the weight himself, and that honesty is what makes the longing hurt more.

The middle of the song reaches for an old, familiar image in Sinhala song: a small boat with its sail tied, drifting alone in the middle of the sea. That is how he feels now, cut loose with no one to steer toward, no shore in sight. When he says she looked at him “as if it were the past,” he means the love is already gone, she sees him the way you look at something that is over, and he is left not knowing where to go.

The last lines turn it almost unbearably gentle. He pictures his heart as a tree that finally grew fruit and leaves, a love that came to full bloom, and asks who he can possibly gather all that sweetness for now that she is gone. His answer is the quiet heartbreak the whole song builds toward: it is still for her, always for her, kept inside him all the time. The love ripened, but there is no one left to give it to.
