A man watches the woman he loves walk away and leave him on his own, and the whole song is him speaking after her, half longing, half coaxing her to soften and smile. He is not bitter. His love is the patient, sheltering kind, the sort that asks for nothing back, and that is the feeling that runs underneath every line.

The pictures he reaches for are all about giving without needing to be seen. He says the moon doesn’t realize that its glow is really the sun’s light handed to it, and in the same breath he tells her: you don’t realize it either, but I am the shade that keeps you cool. A tree heavy with fruit bends low, while a tree with only unopened buds stays stiff and tall, so he is gently teasing her about holding herself back. “Why keep the thirty-two teeth hidden, the mouth shut like a bud that won’t open?” is a warm, old way of asking her to stop being guarded and just let herself smile. He wants her to flow and bend the way a river does, easy and unforced, and the song closes on a small, intimate wish: let that softness reach down and touch his feet, and bring a cool calm to his heart.

What stays with you is the tenderness of it. This is love that protects quietly, like shade, like moonlight, and only asks for one thing in return, a smile freely given.
