Denuwara Min Pasu Eka Nuwarak Meni Lyrics

Denuwara minpasu eka nuwarak meni
Obe hadawatha mahadehi sewanellaki
Yali heta dinayeth api hamuwannemu
Api sakvithiraja kirulu palendemu
Api sakvithiraja kirulu palendemu

Linthota ganthota aaditheneya
Malmada bisawuni oba hamuwuwa //
Senehas arunalu kirana genawa
Nodanimi oba mage hadawetha awa

Dehenaki oba mage hadawatha bandana
Senehasa mithureki duk gini sindana //
Dinayak elabenu etha mananandana
Asiriya malmada sirikatha kendana

Denuwara Min Pasu Eka Nuwarak Meni Lyrics English Translation

From now on the two towns are like one town
Your heart is a shadow inside mine
Tomorrow too, we will meet again
And we will wear the crowns of sakviti kings (world-ruling emperors)
And we will wear the crowns of sakviti kings

At the well, at the river ford, at places like those
Queen of Malmada, I met you //
You brought the dawn rays of love with you
I never knew when you came into my heart

You are a dæhæna (deep meditation) that binds my heart
Love is a friend that puts out the fires of sorrow //
A day will come that gladdens the mind
A blessing, bringing Sirikatha (the goddess of good fortune) home to Malmada

Denuwara Min Pasu Eka Nuwarak Meni Song Meaning and Interpretation

Two young people from two different villages have fallen in love, and the song opens with the boldest thing either of them can say: from today those two towns are one town. Nothing has changed on any map. What has changed is that her heart now lives inside his like a shadow, the one thing that never walks away from you, and he wants her to know he counts on seeing her again tomorrow.

Where they met is pure village life. The well and the river ford were the places young people actually saw each other, carrying water pots or washing clothes, and that is where he first looked up and found her. He calls her the queen of Malmada, half teasing, half meaning every word of it, and then admits he cannot name the day she moved into his heart. Love came the way light comes at dawn, spreading before anyone notices it has started.

The crown line is the one to sit with. A sakviti raja is the chakravarti, the universal monarch of Buddhist tradition, the highest king anyone could imagine. Two ordinary villagers plan to meet tomorrow and put on those crowns, which is exactly how being loved makes a plain life feel. He reaches just as high for her hold on him: dæhæna is the word for the deep absorption a meditator settles into, so what he feels is steady and quiet and total rather than restless wanting.

The last verse looks ahead. Love is a friend that quenches the fires of sorrow, and a day is coming that will gladden the heart. That closing image is a marriage in everything but name: kændana is the word for leading a bride home, and Sirikatha is the goddess of prosperity, so what he pictures is her walking into Malmada and good fortune arriving with her. The song ends holding a promise rather than an ache, which is rare and part of why it stays warm on every listen.
