Oba Tharam Lyrics
Oba tharam pem kala kisiwek nethi tharam
Me lokaye kohewath
Obata man aadare bawa metharam wetahune
Oba wen wee giya daa
Oya nethu hendawu tharam
Oba pem keru tharam
Adahannath ba kohe thibunadoo
Me tharam aadare, me tharam adare..
Reya pura... iki gasa...
rathata heri denuwan pura
Mal sina mewenawa, gilanne hada paarala
Aayeth oba himi wei nam, aathmayen oba adahannam
Thawaeku hata hitha dee athnam
Subha pathala athata wennam
Thani wela ma lowe, hiru nomagina me wasanthe
Divi pura windawami, ahimi karan mage aadare
Aayeth oba himi wei nam, aathmayen oba adahannam
Thawaeku hata hitha dee athnam
Subha pathala athata wennamOba Tharam Lyrics English Translation
No one ever loved the way you did
Nowhere in this whole world
I only understood how much I love you
On the day you left me
The way your eyes filled with tears
The way you loved me
Where did all that come from, I can’t even believe it
This much love, this much love..
All night long… sobbing…
my eyes brimming red until dawn
Flowers and smiles wither away, my heart cracking apart
If you were ever mine again, I would worship you with my whole soul
But if you have given your heart to someone else
I will wish you well and let your hand go
Left alone in this world, this spring where the sun never rises
I will suffer through my whole life, having lost my love
If you were ever mine again, I would worship you with my whole soul
But if you have given your heart to someone else
I will wish you well and let your hand go

Oba Tharam Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man has lost the girl he loved, and the cruel part is that he only grasped how deep his love ran on the very day she walked away. That is where the song opens, with him insisting no one in the whole world ever loved the way she did. It is the kind of regret that arrives too late, when the person is already gone and you are left turning the truth over and over in an empty room.
From there he sinks into the memory of her. He remembers her eyes filling with tears for him, the way she loved him so completely that now, looking back, he can hardly believe it was real. The nights are the hardest. He spends them crying until his eyes turn red at dawn, and he says the flowers and the smiles around him wither while his heart splits open. In Sinhala song, withering flowers stand for joy and life draining away, so he is telling us that with her gone, everything that once bloomed in him is dying off.
Then comes the turn that gives the song its grace. He does not beg her to come back at any cost. He offers two paths. If she could ever be his again, he would devote himself to her like worship, with his whole soul. But if she has already given her heart to someone else, then he will let her hand go and wish her nothing but happiness. That word he reaches for, to wish her well and release her, is the quiet, selfless love that runs through a lot of Sri Lankan heartbreak songs, where loving someone can mean stepping aside for their sake.
The last verse leaves him exactly where the heartbreak puts him, alone in a world he calls a spring where the sun never rises. Spring should be the season of new life and warmth, but for him it has gone cold and dark, a beautiful image of how the whole world dims when love is lost. He knows he will carry this ache for the rest of his life, and yet his final wish is still for her to be happy. That is what the listener is left holding, a love so honest it would rather hurt forever than stand in the way of the person it loves.
