Sanda Renu Galana

Sanda Renu Galana Lyrics English Translation
Into a dream on a moonlit night, moonlight falling like pollen
You come walking in from far away
Talking of weddings to my lonely heart
Talking of weddings //
Today, when the cool breeze breaks into a smile
Did my heart turn this playful?
I don’t know what that feeling was
Into a dream on a moonlit night, moonlight falling like pollen /
That good fortune shining at the corners of your eyes
The way my heart shivers at it
How am I to say what that feeling is
Into a dream on a moonlit night, moonlight falling like pollen
You come walking in from far away
To my lonely heart
Talking of weddings
Talking of weddings
Talking of weddings
Talking of weddings

Sanda Renu Galana Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man is lying awake in the moonlight with nobody to tell, and the girl he loves comes to him only in a dream. She walks in from somewhere far away, sits down beside his lonely heart, and talks about weddings. That is the whole song, one dream, turned over and over. He keeps going back to it because in waking life he has said none of this to her.
The song opens on “sanda renu”, moonlight falling so fine that it drifts like pollen. In Sinhala song the moon stands for a cool, calm sort of beauty, light that softens the dark instead of blazing through it, and here it also gives the night its texture, soft enough for a dream to feel real. Nothing in this song burns. It glows.
The line that carries the weight is “manamaala katha”, bride and groom talk. In Sri Lanka that phrase means one thing, and it is not a small thing. His mind has run past missing her and gone all the way to a life together, a marriage, a house. That he can only say it in a dream, to a heart he calls lonely, is where the ache sits.
The middle verse is the sweetness of new love. A cool breeze passes and he reads a smile in it, then catches himself wondering when his heart got so playful, and admits he cannot name what he felt. The same helplessness returns in the last verse. He looks at the shine at the corners of her eyes and calls it “vaasanaava”, good fortune, the way a Sri Lankan would speak of a blessing rather than a beauty. His heart shivers, “keeri gahenava”, the small physical jolt of being near someone you want, and he gives up trying to put words to it.
The song does not resolve. It just circles back to the chorus and repeats the wedding talk until it fades, which is exactly how the dream would end. He wakes up, the moonlight is still there, and the heart is still lonely.
