My heart wept, my mind broke
My heart broke and cried, that day
on the riverbank
where we met, where we spoke
where we met, spoke, and parted
on this riverbank
This river that made me cry, that comforted me,
this river that left me all alone
My heart wept, my mind broke
my heart broke and cried
that day on the riverbank
The love I offered her was pure
what she longed for was a fairyland
burned in the sun, soaked in the rain
it was only the love in my heart… //
My heart wept, my mind broke
my heart broke and cried, that day
on the riverbank
Even without a golden palace, I am here beside you
you are the king of my world, always
the words we spoke, the comfort we shared
they all stay here in my heart… //
My heart wept, my mind broke… /
My heart wept, my mind broke
my heart broke and cried
that day on the riverbank

Hada Hadala Sitha Bindila Song Meaning and Interpretation
A man stands by a river where he once met the woman he loved, and where he also lost her. The whole song lives in that one place. The riverbank is where they first came together, where they spoke their hopes out loud, and where, in the end, they parted. He calls the river back to mind the way you would call back an old friend who saw everything: it watched him cry, it sat with him while he grieved, and then it left him standing there alone. The water keeps flowing, but the two of them did not last.
In Sinhala song the river is a quiet keeper of memory. It carries time forward and never comes back, the same way a love that has passed cannot be returned to. So when he says this is “the river that made me weep and comforted me,” he is really saying the place itself now holds the whole story, the joy and the loss folded together in one spot on the bank.
The middle of the song is where the ache sharpens. He says the love he gave her was clean and honest, with nothing held back, but what she was reaching for was a “surangana lowa,” a fairyland, the kind of perfect dream world out of folk tales. That is the gap between them in one image. He could offer a true heart through every kind of weather, burning in the sun and drenched in the rain, but he could not hand her a fantasy. Then comes the line that turns the knife gently: he has no golden palace to give, no riches, yet he tells her she is the ruler of his small world all the same. His wealth was only his love, and it was not enough to keep her.
What he is left holding by the end is memory, nothing more. The words they once said to each other, the small comforts that passed between them, all of it now stays inside him while the river keeps moving on without them. It is a tender, defeated kind of love, the love of someone who gave everything he had and watched it slip away, and who can no longer pass that riverbank without the whole thing rising up in him again.
