This is a love duet from the 1981 film Aradhana, sung back and forth between a man and a woman who have found in each other the one safe place in the world. It opens in a cool forest grove with a na tree in full bloom. The na, the ironwood tree, carries a sweet, heavy fragrance, and here that scent stands for the way love has filled their whole life with something fragrant and good. Even on a cold, snowy mountain, they say, the cold can’t reach them, because the warmth of loving each other is enough to keep them warm. That single image, feeling no chill while standing in the snow, says everything about how protected they feel together.

The woman’s voice clings like a creeper vine wound around the body of a tree, asking only for shelter. In Sinhala this is a tender picture, the soft plant that survives by holding onto something stronger, and it speaks of wanting to be kept safe by the one you love rather than weakness.
