A man is writing to a young woman he has fallen for, on a quiet lane, by a lonely house, and from the very first lines you can feel that this love was never going to be allowed. He calls her an innocent young woman, someone who did nothing wrong, and yet, almost without his choosing it, she has taken hold of his whole life. The image he reaches for is a strong one: she has hidden his entire life inside her beauty and locked it away there, like a prisoner. That is how completely he belongs to her, and how little say he has in it.

The ache in the second verse is the cruelty of meeting at all. He pictures the two of them parting inside a single mansion of the past, as if their time together already lives only in memory, a closed room he keeps returning to. He asks her the question that is breaking him: if she knows he can never truly have her, why does she keep calling him, why does she keep coming to see him, day after day?
