A young man is making a promise to the one he loves, and he makes it the way you only make a promise when you mean it for life. He tells her that no matter what comes, for as long as he is alive, she is his love. That single line comes back again and again like a vow he keeps renewing.

He pulls the sea and the wind in to carry the weight of what he feels. The “endless wind” and the “stormy sea” are the troubles and upheavals of life, the rough weather everyone runs into. He is saying that even through all of that, his love holds. Then he turns the sea into a witness. When he says the bond the two of them have built is something “the sea knows,” he means their love is so deep and so long-standing that even something as vast and ancient as the ocean has watched it grow. Calling their love “older than the past” is his way of saying it feels timeless, as if it was always there.

The middle of the song softens into pleading. He calls her his “precious one,” literally his gem, the way a Sinhala lover names someone more valuable than anything he owns, and he asks her not to change toward him. By the last verse the worry underneath shows. He begs her not to wound him with sharp words, not to wear him down with scolding, not to slip away. There is a quiet fear here that the person you love most is also the one who can hurt you most.

What he is really asking for is in that final image. Crossing saṃsāra, the long cycle of birth and rebirth in Buddhist thought, is the biggest commitment a Sri Lankan can offer another person. He is not asking her to stay with him for this life only. He is asking her to walk beside him through every life still to come, and to never let go on the way.
