Bambara Pahasa Labana Malak Do Lyrics
Bambara pahasa labana malak do
Bambara suwaya soyana malak do
Kimado udesane nopipi sinasune
Bambara pahasa labana malak do
Bambara suwaya soyana malak do ...//
Lassanai mage nage oya
Gassala balanne ai oya
As walin dodanne ai oya
Mata hitenne adarei oya ...//
Bambara pahasa labana malak do .../
Ada udet hina wela giya
Mata noke katha kiya giya
Ma situm petum bidee giya
E wunata hitha aran giya ...//
Bambara Pahasa Labana Malak Do Lyrics English Translation
Are you a flower that has felt the bee’s touch,
or a flower still searching for the bee’s comfort?
Why, this morning, did you smile before you had even bloomed?
Are you a flower that has felt the bee’s touch,
or a flower still searching for the bee’s comfort?
You are so beautiful, my dear,
why do you look at me, startled, that way?
Why do you speak to me with your eyes?
It makes me feel you are love itself.
Are you a flower that has felt the bee’s touch…
This morning too you smiled and walked away,
you said so much to me without saying a word,
all my hopes and wishes broke apart,
and even so, you took my heart with you.
Are you a flower that has felt the bee’s touch…

Bambara Pahasa Labana Malak Do Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man has fallen for a girl, and the whole song is one long, unanswered question he keeps turning over in his head: does she already belong to someone, or is her heart still free? He never asks her outright. Instead he watches the way she smiles at him in the mornings and tries to read what it means.
The question lives entirely in the song’s central image. In Sinhala love poetry the bee (bambara) and the flower are the oldest pair there is: the bee that comes to a flower for its nectar is the lover, and the flower is the beloved who receives that love. So when he asks whether she is “a flower that has felt the bee’s touch” or “a flower still searching for the bee’s comfort,” he is really asking whether some other man has already won her, or whether she is still waiting for love to find her. The line about her smiling “before she had even bloomed” carries the same idea, a flower that smiles before it opens is a girl giving off the glow of love before anyone has courted her, and that puzzles and tempts him at once.
From there he just lets the feeling spill out. He tells her she is beautiful, and gently teases her about the startled look she gives him and the way she “speaks with her eyes,” because in village courtship a glance says everything a word is too shy to say. That silent eye-talk is enough to convince him she might love him back. By the last verse the ache shows through: every morning she smiles and walks on past, telling him everything and nothing, leaving his hopes in pieces. And yet he cannot be angry about it, because in the same breath she has quietly carried his heart away with her.
What stays with you is that uncertainty held so tenderly. He is left guessing, half-hopeful and half-hurt, holding onto a smile he cannot quite decode, which is exactly how the start of falling for someone feels.
