It is a gentle, sorrowful song, the kind of longing Sinhala calls virahava, sung softly rather than wept out loud.

The images all carry that feeling. The fragrant flower grove with bees gathered on the blossoms is a picture of love and sweetness that should be shared, yet she stands outside it, alone. Her “blue eyes” (nil nuwan) are the soft dark eyes of a Sinhala beauty, and here they are brimming with tears she keeps holding back. As twilight comes, the loneliest hour of the day, she turns her gaze to a far-off star and wonders whether her beloved is looking out at the same sky, watching for her the way she watches for him.
