Suwanda Dena Mal Wane Lyrics
Suwanda dena mal vane bigun bandila
Kandulu bindu nil nuwan pura randila
Obe lamade sene madure susum nagila
Suwanda dena mal vane bigun bandila
Kandulu bindu nil nuwan pura randila
Me nura sandae kale so susum hela
Aeta tharaka diha nil nuwan yoma
E obe supemvatha evedido bala
Nae pale taevii handa vedana dara
Vedana dara
Suwanda dena mal vane...
Me lowe dinu ape jeevithe ketii
Kaalaye rahas wasa jeevithe galai
Me kuluth piya sala kulin kule randai
Adare amaa hagum ma sithe nagei
Ma sithe nagei
Suwanda dena mal vane...
Suwanda Dena Mal Wane Lyrics English Translation
In the fragrant flower grove the bees are gathered
Teardrops linger, filling these blue eyes
On your chest, in the inner room of love, sighs rise
In the fragrant flower grove the bees are gathered
Teardrops linger, filling these blue eyes
In this lovelorn twilight hour, letting out sorrowful sighs
Turning these blue eyes toward a distant star
Wondering if your beloved is looking out for you
There’s no use grieving, weeping, bearing this pain
Bearing this pain
In the fragrant flower grove…
Our lives, won in this world, are short
Time hides its secrets and life flows on
This blossom too spreads its wings and drifts from one family to the next
Sweet feelings of love rise up in my heart
Rise up in my heart
In the fragrant flower grove…

Suwanda Dena Mal Wane Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young woman sits alone in the fading light of evening, missing the one she loves. That is where this song lives, in the quiet ache of being apart and not knowing whether the person you long for is thinking of you too. It is a gentle, sorrowful song, the kind of longing Sinhala calls virahava, sung softly rather than wept out loud.
The images all carry that feeling. The fragrant flower grove with bees gathered on the blossoms is a picture of love and sweetness that should be shared, yet she stands outside it, alone. Her “blue eyes” (nil nuwan) are the soft dark eyes of a Sinhala beauty, and here they are brimming with tears she keeps holding back. As twilight comes, the loneliest hour of the day, she turns her gaze to a far-off star and wonders whether her beloved is looking out at the same sky, watching for her the way she watches for him. She even tells herself there is no point crying, no point carrying this pain, though of course she keeps carrying it anyway.
The last verse widens out and quietly explains why the parting hurts so much. Life in this world is short, time keeps its secrets and flows on whether we are ready or not, and “this blossom too spreads its wings and drifts from one family to the next.” That line speaks to an old truth in Sri Lankan life, that a daughter, like a flower, eventually leaves the home she grew up in and is given to another household in marriage. So the separation here is not just two lovers kept apart for a night, it is the larger sense that people are moved along by life and circumstance, and that the time we have together is never as long as we want.
What the listener is left holding is that mix of love and resignation. Even as she accepts that life pulls people apart, the tenderness does not fade. Right at the end the sweetness of love still rises in her heart, which is the whole point of the song, that the longing and the love are the same thing.
