This is a Sinhala Christmas carol that celebrates the birth of Jesus and turns it into a quiet wish for peace, both in the world and inside oneself. It opens not with people or a manger but with nature at a still hour: dewdrops falling to the ground, trees swaying gently in the breeze, stars glimmering on and off in the night sky. In Sinhala writing these images set a calm, almost sacred mood, the hush of a night when something holy is happening. The dew “like pearls” (muthu muthu pini keta) is a favourite Sri Lankan image for purity and freshness, and here it greets the moment the song calls the birth of the son of God on a blessed, joyful day.

From that peaceful opening the song moves into a gentle call to action. The singer invites everyone to “light up the world” during Christmas, to spread peace and harmony in their hearts, and to wash the dirt out of their own minds. That last line is the heart of it: the real cleaning is not of the house but of the self, letting go of bad and unkind thoughts so the heart is fit to welcome the child. Then comes the warmest image, singing lullabies to soothe the baby Jesus, treating him the way a family would gather around any newborn.

The final verse becomes personal and tender, almost a prayer spoken straight to the child. The singer calls him “my fair Jesus” and “my golden Jesus,” born in Bethlehem, and says simply, I came to see you. There is a plea to one day wash away the singer’s sins, and then a touchingly local question that gives the whole carol its Sri Lankan flavour: “Will you come to dear Sri Lanka too?” It is the wish of an islander who wants the peace and grace of that holy birth to reach their own small country, not just faraway Bethlehem. The song ends on that gentle longing, faith mixed with love of home.
