This is a father’s song, and it is one of the saddest situations a Sri Lankan family knows. The mother has gone abroad to work, most likely to the Middle East, leaving behind a husband and small children, and the man left at home is the one singing. From the very first lines you can see the children in the yard, lifting their little hands up to the sky and shouting that their mother is coming, their cries carrying right across the village. They are watching the sky because they know she flew away in a plane, and in their minds the sky is the road that will bring her back.

The hardest images sit just under the surface. The land is being signed away, mortgaged because the family had no money, and the man admits he cannot save it. That is often the very reason the mother went abroad in the first place, to earn enough to hold on to a small piece of ground, and now even that is slipping away. When he says she left taking the children’s love into pawn, he means she pledged away the most precious thing in the house, her own children’s closeness, the way you pawn jewellery, in the hope of buying the family a better life. The ehela flowers blooming by the fence mark the spot where the two of them once met and made their promises, a tender memory now turned painful, because that same promise to provide is what carried her away and left sorrow on both of them.

The middle of the song is almost unbearable in its plainness. A plane passes over the house and the children run out, then cry because their mother did not climb down from it. They refuse to eat, complaining the rice balls he rolls for them are too big, because a father’s hands are not a mother’s hands. They cannot sleep because his lullaby does not sound the way hers did. These are not grand metaphors, just the small daily failures of a man trying to be both parents at once, and they cut deep precisely because they are so ordinary.

By the last verse the father drops his guard and admits he cannot sleep either, that his heart sings of her through the whole night. The closing line, that a crying heart cannot be calmed without her honey-sweet tenderness, is the gentle Sinhala way of saying that no one else, not even a loving father, can fill the place a mother holds. The song does not blame her. It understands exactly why she left, and that is what makes it ache so much: everyone in this house is paying the price of love and poverty at the same time.
