A young man sees a woman for the first time, and instead of the thrill of something new, he is hit by a strange sense that he already knows her. The whole song sits in that feeling. She is a stranger, yet she looks familiar, and the warmth that washes over him is not excitement so much as recognition, as if a part of him is remembering rather than discovering.

From there he reaches for the only explanation that makes sense to him, and it is one a Sri Lankan listener feels instantly. He is sure they have never met in this life, so the closeness must be left over from saṃsāra, the long chain of past lives in which two souls keep finding each other birth after birth. When he sings of “carrying our wishes from one birth to the next,” he means the old idea that love made in one lifetime pulls people back together in the next, that meeting her now is the keeping of a promise made an age ago.

The turn that gives the song its heart is the line about Isurumuniya. He is pointing to the Isurumuniya Lovers, the famous stone carving at the ancient rock temple in Anuradhapura, two figures seated close, a man and a woman, that Sri Lankans have long taken as the image of devoted, enduring love. By asking whether they met here “to guard the pair of lovers at Isurumuniya,” he is placing the two of them inside that legend, as if their own meeting is meant to keep that ancient symbol of love alive.

What the listener is left holding is something gentler and deeper than ordinary attraction. This is not a man swept off his feet by a pretty face. It is the quiet wonder of feeling that a love is older than this life, that the person in front of you was always going to find you again. That is why the questions at the end stay open, “did you come to me,” “did we meet here.” He does not need an answer. The feeling is enough.
