Mohothaka Suwa Dena

Mohothaka Suwa Dena Lyrics English Translation
In this restless world that gives comfort for only a moment
I never went looking for pretty faces
Searching for the ease that love brings
I come longing for you, my darling //
On the days your heart is heavy
Don’t tremble, my golden star
In front of the whole world, you are my own blood
Don’t burn yourself up, my white gem
Let us be at peace, close together
In this restless world that gives comfort for only a moment…
The feelings that run in us like flowing blood
Yours and mine are one and the same
In front of the whole world, you are beautiful to me
Don’t cry, my white gem
Let us be at peace, close together
In this restless world that gives comfort for only a moment…

Mohothaka Suwa Dena Song Meaning and Interpretation
A man is telling the woman he loves why he chose her, and he begins by clearing away what he did not come for. The world he describes is chanchala, unsteady and always shifting, a place where whatever comfort you find lasts a moment and then moves on. Pretty faces belong to that world, and he says he never went chasing them. What he went looking for was the ease that love gives, and that search brought him to her.
From there the song settles into reassurance. She has her sad days, and he asks her not to shake, not to burn herself up over them. He calls her his golden star and his sudu manike, his white gem, both ordinary Sinhala endearments for someone precious and bright, the sort of thing a man says to his wife or his sweetheart without thinking twice. The promise sitting under those words is a small one. Come close, and we can be calm.
The strongest image waits until the last verse. He says the feelings moving through them run like blood, and that his and hers are the same. Calling someone your ruhiru, your blood, is the language of family rather than romance in Sinhala, so the line moves her out of the place of a girl he admires and into the place of someone he is bound to. The lyric also plays that word against its near twin rusiru, beauty. In front of the whole world she is his blood, and in front of the whole world she is beautiful to him, and it is his eye that decides that, nobody else’s.
Nothing dramatic happens across the song. Nobody leaves, nobody is betrayed. A man keeps saying the same thing in different words, that in a world where nothing stays put, she should not tremble and should not cry, and that sitting close to him is enough. That steadiness is what the listener is left holding.
