A young man is sitting with the absence of someone he loves, and the very first line tells you what it has cost him: because of her, his own smile has gone. He still carries her smiles in his memory, but she herself is not here, and that gap is the whole song. He even lets himself say the lonely thought out loud, that if he can never have her, he may just stay alone and never marry. It is the kind of quiet, stubborn devotion that comes early in love, when one person feels like the only possible answer.

The middle of the song leans on two images that a Sinhala listener feels instantly. The river that “flows on in loneliness” is him: a river keeps moving forward no matter what, never able to stop or turn back, and that is how he feels carried along by time without her. The moon is her. In Sinhala song the moon is the standing image of a calm, gentle beauty, the face you look up for in the dark.
