Oya Nisa Mage Sina Lyrics
Oya nisa mage sina meki giyaden..
Obe sinawan matake radi thiyedden..
Obe punchi dothol athare ma thaniwedden..
Oya labenne nathinam thanikada wedden..
Thanikamen ganga gala yanawa
Sade numba na ambare..
Vidawamin sitha soyanawa thaw
Oya kothanada hangune..
Api hamuwunothin - sanda ei nagila
Gangawata eliya aran - adara mal yayak aran..
Bala innam thaw hugak kal
Oya enathuru ma soya...
Oya nawath iwasala hitha
Hadagannam oba nisa..
Thanikama uhula - pahalata galana
Ganga se innam sathutin - senehasa randa rahasin...
Oya nisa mage sina...
Oya Nisa Mage Sina Lyrics English Translation
Because of you, my smile faded away..
While your smiles still linger in my memory..
As I grow lonely held in your small hands..
If I can’t have you, I’ll be left alone, unmarried..
The river flows on in loneliness
You, my moon, are not there in the sky..
Aching, my heart keeps searching still,
where is it you’ve hidden away..
If only we could meet, the moon would rise
bringing light to the river, bringing a field of love-flowers..
I’ll keep watching a while longer
searching for you until you come…
Even if you don’t come, I’ll calm my heart,
I’ll steady it for your sake..
Bearing the loneliness, flowing downward
I’ll stay happy like the river, hiding away my love like gold…
Because of you, my smile…

Oya Nisa Mage Sina Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man is sitting with the absence of someone he loves, and the very first line tells you what it has cost him: because of her, his own smile has gone. He still carries her smiles in his memory, but she herself is not here, and that gap is the whole song. He even lets himself say the lonely thought out loud, that if he can never have her, he may just stay alone and never marry. It is the kind of quiet, stubborn devotion that comes early in love, when one person feels like the only possible answer.
The middle of the song leans on two images that a Sinhala listener feels instantly. The river that “flows on in loneliness” is him: a river keeps moving forward no matter what, never able to stop or turn back, and that is how he feels carried along by time without her. The moon is her. In Sinhala song the moon is the standing image of a calm, gentle beauty, the face you look up for in the dark. So when he says “you, my moon, are not there in the sky,” he means the one light that used to settle him is missing, and the night feels empty. He imagines that if they could only meet, the moon would rise again, pour its light over the river and bring a whole field of flowers into bloom. It is his way of saying that her return would turn his grey, flowing loneliness back into something living and bright.
By the last verse the ache softens into patience. He decides he will keep watching and waiting a while longer, and even if she never comes, he will calm his own heart and learn to carry the loneliness rather than fight it. He compares himself again to the river, but this time it flows downward and stays happy, holding his love quietly inside, hidden away like gold. That last image is the gentlest part of the whole song: gold is precious and you keep it safe and out of sight, so he is telling himself he will guard this love in secret, treasured, even if no one ever sees it and even if she never knows. What the listener is left holding is that mix of sadness and grace, a man who has lost the smile she gave him, yet chooses to keep loving her without bitterness.
