Thaththa Mata Anapu Tokka Lyrics
Taatta mata anapu tokka dawaale taru penuna
Ee arapu sattamwalata kandeka mage piruna
Edaa mata penune obawa hathurek waagei taatte
Ada mata penenne oba dewiyek waagei taatte
Edaa mata penune obawa hathurek waagei taatte
Dewiyan wandina daethin depa wadinnam taattee

Katti panna daa gedarata wettu damala
Ahuwuna ma berennata kiwwama boru gothala

Edaa mata penune obawa...
Sangeethen ihala yanna apa unandu karala
Purudu puhunu keruwe darunu neethi reethi damala

Kae gasu hati mathakai mata tarahen orawala...

Koi lokeka hitiya th oba apa haemagen midila
Taatte obe pihita adath thiye apata labila ..
Taatta mata anapu tokka...
Edaa mata penune obawa...
Thaththa Mata Anapu Tokka Lyrics English Translation
The flick my father gave me made me see stars in broad daylight
With every smack he landed, a whole mountain of pain filled up in me
Back then you looked to me like an enemy, father
Today you look to me like a god, father
Back then you looked to me like an enemy, father
With these hands that worship the gods, I’ll bow at your feet, father
Coming home from school, tossing the books aside
Slipping off with the gang, leaving the house behind
Caught out and making up lies just to wriggle free
Didn’t you scold me in a rage, slaps hard enough to split my ear…
Back then you looked to me like…
Pushing us to rise through music
You trained and drilled us, laying down harsh rules
If we slipped up even a little, you’d knock the ground from under us
I remember how you yelled, glaring at us in anger…
Back then you looked to me like…
When I look back now at all you did and said
I can see it was all done for our own good
Wherever you are now, freed from us all
Father, even today your help is still with us…
The flick my father gave me…
Back then you looked to me like…

Thaththa Mata Anapu Tokka Song Meaning and Interpretation
This is a grown man’s thank-you to his late father, a father who was strict to the point of being frightening when his children were small. The song opens with a memory most Sri Lankan kids of a certain generation will recognise at once: the “tokka,” the sharp flick of a finger to the head, and a slap so hard it “made me see stars in daylight.” The image of a whole mountain of pain filling up inside is not really about the sting of the blow. It is about how huge and unfair that discipline felt to a child who could not yet understand it.
The heart of the song is the line that keeps coming back: back then you looked to me like an enemy, today you look to me like a god. That turn is the whole story. As a boy the singer saw only the anger, the harsh rules, the yelling. He remembers throwing his schoolbooks aside, slipping off with his friends, getting caught and telling lies to save himself, and then the furious scolding that followed. He remembers being pushed into music with brutal discipline, drilled under tough rules, knocked down for the smallest mistake. At the time it all felt like cruelty.
Then the song grows up alongside the singer. Looking back as an adult, he finally sees that every bit of that hardness was done for his own good, that the strict father was building something in his children. When he says he will bow at his father’s feet with the same hands he uses to worship the gods, he is doing something deeply Sri Lankan: worshipping the parent the way you worship the divine. In our culture touching a parent’s or elder’s feet is the highest mark of respect and gratitude, and here it carries an apology too, for all the years the boy resented the man who was only trying to raise him right.
The last verse quietly tells us the father has passed on, “freed from us all,” wherever he is now. Yet the singer feels his help still reaching him, still steadying him, even from beyond. What the listener is left holding is that ache so many of us carry: we only understand our parents after they are gone, and the love we resisted as children turns out to have been the thing that shaped us. The Gypsies, themselves a family band of brothers who came up through music, sing this with the weight of people who really lived it.
