Amathaka karanna epa, mawa mathaka tiyagena inna sithe

Kandulel salan epa, yali soya ennem obawa mese

Vasana sada paedune, oba nisai jeewithe.
Saema da oba redeyi ma sithe....
Amathaka karanna epa ...
Amathaka Karannepa Lyrics English Translation
Don’t forget me, keep me in your heart
Even if I have to part and go away, you will stay in my heart for all time
Don’t shed tears, I will come looking for you again, just like this
Don’t forget, don’t ever forget me
(Reply) I won’t forget, I could never forget you
Singing sweet songs, winning a name in the world of music
The time I spent close to you, I can never forget
Whatever good fortune ever came into my life, it was all because of you
Every single day, you stay in my heart
Don’t forget me …/
Going far, far away, searching for the day still to come
Bound to you just the way we are now, will you be there by my side then?
Whatever good fortune ever came into my life, it was all because of you
Every single day, you stay in my heart
Don’t forget me …

Amathaka Karannepa Song Meaning and Interpretation
Someone is leaving, and right at the moment of goodbye they turn to the person they love and ask for one small thing: don’t forget me. That is the whole heart of this song. A man is heading away, far from home and from the one he loves, and before he goes he wants them to hold on to him in their memory the way he will hold on to them. He even answers his own plea, the song slips into a second voice that promises back, “I won’t forget, I could never forget you.” So it becomes two people comforting each other across a parting neither of them wants.
The tenderness shows in how he handles their tears. “Don’t shed tears,” he says, and then makes a promise to soften the goodbye, “I’ll come looking for you again, just like this.” He isn’t pretending the separation won’t hurt. He’s saying it isn’t the end, only a pause, and one day he will return and find them the same as ever. There’s something very Sri Lankan in that gentleness, the way leaving is wrapped in a vow to come back rather than a clean farewell.
Then he looks at his own life and gives the credit away. He has sung sweet songs and made a name in the world of music, yet none of that is what he counts. What he counts is the time he spent close to this person, and he tells them plainly that any happiness or good fortune his life ever found was because of them. The phrase he uses, the good fortune that “dawned” in his life, carries the feeling of light breaking over a morning, as if their presence is what made everything come clear. In the last verse the worry surfaces quietly: he pictures returning one day and asks whether they will still be bound to him the way they are now, still waiting by his side. That single uncertain question is what gives the song its ache. He is sure of his own love, less sure that time and distance will leave the other person’s love untouched, and so he keeps circling back to the same gentle request, don’t forget me.
