A young woman walks home from the bathing pond, and the whole song is one long look at her. The voice belongs to a man watching from a distance, half in wonder and half uneasy on her behalf. He never uses her name. He calls her the queen of flowers and love, and he keeps asking the same question, where could she be going.

The pictures he reaches for come straight out of old Sinhala poetry. A village pond catching the evening light becomes a golden pond, and that one word lifts an ordinary scene into something courtly, the way a queen would bathe. Her wet hair, dark enough to be called blue, falls to the middle of her back, and even the way she walks stirs love in anyone who sees it. Nothing is happening yet. That is the point. The first half is pure admiration, unhurried, the way you watch someone you cannot look away from.

Then the song darkens. She is asleep on a bed of flowers when a demon arrives, wearing a cruel face, and dances his lust in front of her. The demon stands for a man, and the song gives him a mask because that is how such men come, looking like something else until they are close enough. Coming right after those soft opening verses, the line lands like cold water.

The last verse turns into advice. With the prince already there, why wear yourself out hiding behind a flower? And then the sharpest image in the song: bees fly in and let the scent of a camphor flower fool them. Camphor blossom smells strong and gives nothing back, no nectar, so the bees work for nothing and leave empty. Beauty and perfume will always pull in a crowd, he is saying, but that crowd is chasing a scent. What is left with the listener is the worry underneath the praise, a man admiring a woman and hoping she can tell the difference between the one who is truly hers and the ones drawn in by fragrance alone.
