Domba Mal Kalawe Lyrics
Domba mal kalawe bambaran gayu
Kawiyak wage adare
Ath wel bandan yanna lanwee langin inna
Sansara giri durgaye
Raa pini pode seeta mitiyawathe
Me kethakee mal wane
Sanda se uda wu senehe nima weda
Duk dorakadin heta dine
Katu kudu mathin enna ura gawa gawa
Hinahi dethol iri thala
Paedunu sandak nisaru ahase pipewa
Katu weta udin payala
Domba Mal Kalawe Lyrics English Translation
In the forest of domba flowers, where the bees hummed
a love like a poem
to walk hand in hand, to come close and stay near
through the steep mountain passes of saṃsāra (the cycle of rebirth)
In the falling night dew, in the cold valley
in this woodland of ketaki flowers
will this love that rose like the moon come to an end
at sorrow’s doorstep tomorrow
Come to me over the thorns and dust, close by my shoulder
your lips parted in a smile
may a clear moon bloom in the empty sky
rising over the thorn fence

Domba Mal Kalawe Song Meaning and Interpretation
A man is speaking to the woman he loves, and what he is really doing is asking her to walk the whole of life with him. He pictures their love as something fragile and beautiful set against a hard road, and the question underneath every line is the same: will it last, or will tomorrow take it away.
He begins with a soft, green image, a forest of domba flowers with bees humming through it, and says their love is like a poem born in that place. Then he names the journey he wants to make with her: hand in hand, side by side, through “the steep mountain passes of saṃsāra.” Saṃsāra is the Buddhist idea of the long cycle of birth and rebirth, the endless wandering through many lives. By placing their love against it, he is not asking for an evening or a season together, he is asking her to stay close through all of it, through every hardship the road throws up. That is the Sri Lankan way of saying “for as long as we exist.”
The middle verse turns anxious. He sets the scene in cold night dew, in a misty valley thick with ketaki flowers, and asks the question that haunts the song: this love rose like the moon, will it really be over by tomorrow, left standing at the doorstep of sorrow? The moon here is the image of something that climbed quietly and beautifully into view, and the fear is that it could set just as quietly. Love that begins so gently feels too easy to lose.
So the last verse becomes a plea and a prayer at once. Come to me, he says, even over the thorns and the dust, lean in close with that smile on your parted lips. And then the lovely closing wish: may a clear moon bloom in this empty sky, rising even over the thorn fence. The thorns are all the trouble that stands between them, the barren sky is a life without her, and the moon he hopes will rise above it all is their love, holding on and lighting the dark in spite of everything. The song leaves you with that ache and that hope held together, a man who knows the road is rough and asks for love anyway.
