On this sleepless night, the moon weeps in a mist of tears
Why does it hide and cry like this, oh first love
The stars drown in the water, the blue light goes out
Raindrops begin to fall, and rose petals break and scatter
Shivering and trembling in the endless cold
I close my eyes and nestle into your warmth
Our life, in the end, is not a dream we get to keep
Tomorrow at dawn I have to wake and go
The night wears on, the moon fades, life lies far ahead
And so I take my leave, my little princess
Pressing my lips to the thorns of a tree with no flower
I steal that one kiss, and it is mine, my love

Ninda Nathi Raye Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man is spending his last night with the girl he loves, and he already knows that when morning comes he will have to leave her for good. That is the ache the whole song is built on. He is not crying out or pleading, he is just lying awake beside her in the dark, watching the night slip away and trying to hold on to a few more hours. This is his first love, and he is saying goodbye to it.
The lyric leans almost entirely on images of the night sky and rain, and each one carries the weight of his sorrow. When he says the moon is weeping in a mist of tears and hiding its face, he is really describing his own grief, the moon, the gentle light that usually watches over lovers, can no longer bear to look. The stars drowning in water and the blue light going out is the night itself dying, the way his hope is dying. Then the rain comes and the rose petals break and fall, and in Sinhala song a flower losing its petals is the standing image of a love that is ending, of beauty that cannot last. Everything beautiful in the sky is being put out, one thing at a time, in step with what is happening to him.
The middle verse pulls in close and tender. Cold and shaking, he shuts his eyes and presses himself into her warmth, trying to feel safe one last time. Then comes the hardest line of the song, plain and unbearable, our life is not a dream we get to keep, tomorrow I have to wake and go. He is telling himself the truth he has been avoiding all night. Whatever this love was, it was never going to last into the daylight. Real life, with its duties and its distances, is waiting on the other side of dawn.
By the end he gives up the fight. The night is over, the moon has faded, and the road ahead is long, so he says goodbye to her, calling her his little princess, the small tender name that says how dear she is to him. The final image is the one that stays with you. He presses his lips to the thorns of a tree that has no flower and takes that as his one kiss. The flower is gone, the love he wanted is out of reach, and all that is left for him to hold is the pain, the thorns. He chooses to kiss even that, because the hurt is all he has left of her, and he will carry it with him as the only thing that is truly his.
