Sandapane Gaman Yanna Lyrics
(Sandapane gaman yanna savanata kodura kiyanne
Oba enakan balan innado
Sanda nethida kathavenna mage paluwa makagannado
Mithurek ma soyagannado...//)
Savana pura - mihira ura
Obage gee handinda math une mema
Mavana sina - denetha pura
Obage e ruwinda math une mema
Sandapane gaman yanna....
Erabadu mal - kakulu pipi
Rathu patin vasi giya mata mathakai
Kowul handai - avuruddai
Obe sina handin piri giya vagei
Sandapane gaman yanna....//
Sandapane Gaman Yanna Lyrics English Translation
(Go travelling on the moonlight, and whisper softly in her ear,
ask her if she is waiting for you to come.
On the nights with no moon, talk to me and ease my loneliness,
find me a friend, won’t you…//)
Filling my ears, drinking in the sweetness,
it was your singing voice that left me spellbound.
Filling my eyes with the smiles you made,
it was that beauty of yours that left me spellbound.
Go travelling on the moonlight….
The erabadu flowers, buds opening,
covering everything in red, I remember it well.
The koel was calling, it was Avurudu,
as if the whole world was filled with the sound of your laughter.
Go travelling on the moonlight….//

Sandapane Gaman Yanna Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man is so full of someone he loves that he can’t say it to her face, so he sends the moonlight to do it for him. Go and travel to her, he tells it, slip up close and whisper in her ear, and find out the one thing he most wants to know, whether she is waiting for him too. On the nights when there is no moon and no messenger to send, he turns and asks the moon itself to keep him company and take the edge off how alone he feels, to be the friend he’s missing. That’s the whole ache of the song, a love he carries quietly, with only the sky to confide in.
The middle of the song is pure memory. He remembers being completely swept away by her, first by her singing voice filling his ears, then by her smile filling his eyes, the same word for it both times, the feeling of being intoxicated, drunk on her without a drop of arrow. He isn’t describing wanting her so much as being held under a spell he can’t shake.
The imagery in the last verse is where a Sri Lankan listener feels the most. The erabadu is the coral tree, and when it blooms it turns flame red, and that red happens to come at the start of the year, around the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. He pairs it with the koha, the koel, whose call is the sound everyone here links to Avurudu and the turning of spring. So when he says the koel was calling and it was Avurudu and the buds were opening red, he isn’t just painting a season, he’s placing this love at the brightest, most hopeful time of the year, a fresh start, everything in bloom. And then the line that ties it together, it felt as if the whole world was filled with the sound of her laughter. The new year, the red flowers, the birdsong, all of it has folded into one memory of her.
What the listener is left holding is that gap between then and now. Back then the world was loud with her laughter and red with new blooms. Now he is talking to the moon on empty nights, hoping it will carry his question to her and bring back a yes. It’s the quiet, patient kind of longing, still tender, still hoping she is waiting on the other side.
