A boat rows out, riding the ocean waves
Skimming along the far horizon, grazing it as it goes
Searching for the deep waters far away, scenting its way along
Casting our nets here and there, we bring the fish home
(We row the boat out, going without sleep through the night
For the children, for the wife we watch over, we cast our nets and come home)…//
Riding the ocean waves….
(We gather the strength in our two hands, we row the boat out
The shore showing far in the distance, we cast our nets and come home)…//
A boat rows out, riding the ocean waves
Skimming along the far horizon, grazing it as it goes
Searching for the deep waters far away, scenting its way along
(Casting our nets here and there, we bring the fish home)…//

Muhudu Ralla Osse Song Meaning and Interpretation
This is a fisherman’s song, the kind of work song that carries the rhythm of the sea in it. There is no lover or heartbreak here. The voice belongs to the men who go out on the water, and they sing about their own lives: rowing the little wooden boat out past the breakers, casting the nets, and bringing the catch back to the village. Clarence Wijewardena wrote and sang it, and you can almost hear the oars pulling in the beat of the words.
The picture builds slowly across the song. First the oruwa, the simple outrigger canoe that Sri Lankan fishermen have used for generations, slides out over the waves. The line about the boat “grazing the horizon” (nim walalla) is the way the sea looks from low in a small boat, where the water seems to run right up and touch the edge of the sky, so the boat looks like it is brushing against that far rim as it goes. They head for the deep water far out, “scenting” their way, the word for how an experienced fisherman reads the sea by feel and instinct to find where the fish are.
The heart of the song is the verse that repeats. Rowing out, staying awake all night on the water, is not done for its own sake. It is done for the children and for the wife waiting at home (daruwo ambu rakinne). That single line turns a song about hard labour into a song about love and duty. The hands tire, the strength has to be summoned fresh each time (daethe sawiya ganne), and the only reward in sight is the thin line of the shore far off in the distance, the home they are working to get back to.
What you are left holding is the quiet pride of working people. No complaint, no drama, just the long night, the pull of the oars, and the simple promise underneath it all: we cast our nets, and we come home. It honours a whole way of life on the Sri Lankan coast, where the sea both feeds a family and asks everything of the men who go out on it.
