A young man is out in the hill country, guarding a chena, the highland plot that village families clear and plant and then have to watch over so animals and birds don’t take the crop. He sits up through the night in the little pael, the raised watch-hut in the field, and instead of feeling lonely he is happy, because the whole time he is thinking about the girl he loves. That is the warm, settled feeling the song runs on. This isn’t the ache of being apart so much as the easy contentment of a man who knows exactly who he’s waiting for.

He calls her “Sudu Manike,” and it helps to know what that carries. “Sudu” means fair or light-skinned, long held up in village songs as a mark of beauty, and “manike” means a gem or jewel. Put together it’s the tenderest of pet names, “my fair jewel,” the kind of thing a man calls the one woman he treasures. He stacks his praise the way village poetry does, all drawn from the world around him. Her face is the first light of the sun at dawn, the gentlest, most welcome light of the day. His love opening up in his chest is like the kakulu mal, the buds, breaking into bloom that very morning. The fields and the sky aren’t just scenery here; they are how he reaches for feelings he has no fancier words for.

The most beautiful image comes with the rain. “Nil wesse,” the blue rain, is that soft grey-blue downpour that greens the chena and that every farmer waits for. He says when the flowers catch sight of her face in that rain, they smile in secret. The land itself seems to brighten because she is near, a quiet way of saying his whole world looks better through the eyes of someone in love. And then the song turns from waiting to deciding. By the last lines he is no longer just watching the path; he is on his way to her, telling her plainly that he is coming to take her with him, “kendaagena enawa,” to bring her home as his own.
