It is dusk, and a young man is standing by himself on the sand, watching the evening clouds drift across the sky and waiting for the girl he loves. He keeps looking down the path for her, half hoping, half afraid. Will she come tonight, or won’t she? That small, gnawing doubt in his heart is where the whole song lives.

The waiting turns into a quiet ache. She is his comfort, the one person who settles him, and not knowing when he will see her again leaves him restless. When he asks why she stays away and “breaks his hopes to pieces,” he isn’t accusing her so much as pleading. The word he uses for her, mihire (sweet one), keeps the tenderness in it even while he hurts. He has handed his heart to her, and now he is left on the shore not knowing if she feels the same.

The imagery is gentle and tied to the sea. The drifting evening clouds set the mood of someone alone at the end of the day, when light is fading and the heart grows softer and more uncertain.
