You were a festival to my eyes back then,
now, in between, you have become a single teardrop
why does it wound my heart so much?
was some fault of it mine, I wonder
Because a world without you
is something I cannot even bring myself to imagine,
hiding your heart away in another’s hand,
do not come leading sorrow to me
Though your face was a rasanjana to my eyes,
it is fine, I need no other for my sight
but that face, now belonging to someone else,
that I cannot bear to endure

Nethata Ulelak Song Meaning and Interpretation
This is a poignant classical song of lost love, carried by the composing of the late Gunadasa Kapuge and the words of Mahinda Dissanayaka. Its opening turn is beautiful and bitter at once: you were once a festival to my eyes, the singer says, and now you have become a single teardrop. He asks why it wounds him so deeply, and wonders, almost gently, whether some part of the fault was his own.
The ache is that he cannot even picture a world without her. Knowing she has hidden her heart away in someone else’s hand, he pleads with a quiet dignity: do not come leading sorrow to me. There is no rage in it, only the request of a man trying to protect what little peace he has left.
The last verse holds the heart of the song. Her face was a rasanjana to his eyes, he says, the precious collyrium that clears and blesses the sight, so much so that he needs no other sight at all. What he cannot bear is that this same face now belongs to someone else. It is a restrained, grown-up song about jealousy and loss, the kind of writing that made Kapuge’s melodies last.
