A young man is letting go of the woman he loved, and he is doing it the hard way, by setting her free instead of begging her to stay. The song opens with a tender image: she wrote a love poem in the sky of his mind, then rubbed it out and slipped away. In Sinhala, the “sky of the mind” is where you imagine and dream, so what he is saying is that she filled his thoughts with love and then erased all of it without a word. She lived in his heart this whole time, and now he wonders how he was ever meant to finish writing a full love story that she walked out of.

The middle is where the ache turns into something braver. If she truly means to go, he tells her to go, because he cannot make himself ask her to stay. There is a quiet catch in the next line: even the thought of coming back to her, he refuses, because his own heart now forbids it. It is the voice of someone protecting what little is left of himself, choosing dignity over one more plea.

The closing image is the one that lands hardest, and it carries a very Sri Lankan way of speaking about love that cannot be. He thanks her for the joy she gave him, gently and lovingly, and asks if that wasn’t enough to be grateful for. Then he says the moonlight has come to belong to the earth, even though the moon itself stays up in the sky. The moon and its light are tied to each other, yet they live in two different worlds, one far above, one down below. That is how he sees the two of them now. He got to keep the warmth of her love, the moonlight, while she herself was always going to remain out of reach. He is not bitter about it. He is grateful he had the light at all, even if the moon was never his to hold.
