A young man is trying to tell someone how much he loves her, and the first thing he admits is that he can’t. The love is too big for words. He says no one in the whole world means as much to him as she does, and that he could never take back the life he has already given over to her. That is where the song sits: a love so total that the person feels he has handed his whole self away and has no wish to ask for it back.

The big idea running underneath is saṃsāra, the Buddhist cycle of being born and dying again and again. When he sings about searching for her “through countless ages, fulfilling vow after vow,” he is drawing on a belief many Sri Lankans carry close to the heart: that two people who truly belong together found each other not just in this life but across many lifetimes, after lifetimes of merit and longing. Saying he came looking for her across kalpas (vast stretches of cosmic time) is the strongest way in this culture to say “you were always the one.” It turns an ordinary love into something fated.

And yet this is not a happy love. Notice that almost every line is about what he cannot do and what he must endure. The tears keep falling, and instead of hoping they’ll stop, he accepts them as his own to carry forever. The dreams he once had, he kept faint and unspoken, never letting them grow loud. When the hurt comes back moment after moment, he doesn’t fight it; it has become so familiar that he simply closes his eyes and stays inside it. This is the quiet, self-sacrificing kind of love that Sinhala song returns to again and again, where loving someone fully and getting little back is borne not as a complaint but as a fate one chose.

What the listener is left holding is that tender ache. He isn’t begging her to love him back or even asking her to know how much he hurts. He has made his peace with carrying the pain alone, lifetime after lifetime, because to him even the suffering is part of belonging to her.
