A man is speaking to a woman he loved and lost, calling her sonduriya, “my beautiful one.” She is gone, and the whole song is him talking to her in the empty space where she used to be. The first thing out of his mouth is an accusation against time itself: how cruel it is. Time is what filled his eyes with tears, took away the one who shared his life, and tore out the steady rhythm he once kept. That word for rhythm matters here. He doesn’t say time took her, he says it took the beat his days moved to, the balance that made an ordinary life feel whole. Once she was gone, nothing kept time anymore.

In the middle of the song he reaches for an image a Sinhala listener feels right away. He says the poem became her. In the years when life still soothed him, all his longing and the sorrow that came with it gathered up and turned into a single thing, a kaviya, a poem, and that poem was her. She wasn’t separate from his feeling. She was the shape his feeling took. That is why losing her feels like losing the only words he had.

The grief deepens as he admits how far she has slipped from him. Her face used to live inside his heart, and now it won’t even come to him in a dream. He keeps circling back to the same small ache, how sweet that face was, the way you keep touching a bruise. Then comes the line that tells you when she died: on a day the spring moon faded. In Sinhala song the moon stands for serene, gentle beauty, and the spring moon is youth and life at their fullest. For that moon to die mid-season says she went far too soon, beautiful and young, with the best of her still ahead.

The last turn is the one that lands hardest. He says even the sorrow they once shared and held between them isn’t with him anymore, and then, how sweet even that sorrow was. Back when she was alive, even their sad days were something they carried together, and that made the sadness precious. Now he doesn’t even have the shared grief. He is left holding a loneliness so complete that he misses the old pain, because at least the old pain had her in it.
